Greek Court Orders State to Pay 300,000 Over Covid Vaccine Death

A court in Greece has ordered the state to pay ?300,000 in compensation to the family of a woman who died after receiving a Covid-19 vaccine produced by AstraZeneca, in a decision that could have wider legal implications for similar cases.

The ruling came from a court in Athens, which found that the woman's death was linked to the vaccination and that the state bears responsibility because the immunization campaign was carried out as part of national public health policy during the pandemic.

The Ministry of Health argued that vaccination against Covid-19 was voluntary and therefore the state should not be held liable for any adverse consequences. However, the court rejected that position and accepted that the broader context of the vaccination campaign made the state accountable.

As a result, the relatives of the deceased woman were awarded compensation of ?300,000.

Legal experts say the decision is particularly important because it may open the way for other claims involving serious side effects following Covid vaccination. According to lawyers involved in such cases, the key factor remains medical expertise that can clearly establish a direct causal link between the vaccine and the health complication or death.

They stress that without such proof, similar claims would be difficult to sustain in court, but this ruling shows that where such evidence exists, compensation may be granted.
